The Coton de Tuléar is an unusual little African breed that is almost perfect.
The dogs originally come from Madagascar, but unlike the other African
dogs—almost all of which are hunters—this little guy is small, affectionate,
and perfectly suited for sitting on a lap. They do not shed much, are clean,
and do not stink like some other dogs. Many Coton owners even mention that
their dogs are not yappy like a lot of small breeds.

Despite some of those stories about this breed once being a boar or crocodile
hunter, this Bichon-type dog has been small since the time he was first
brought to Madagascar by the pirates. If you are lucky enough to have found
one of these rare and expensive dogs and have brought him home, the first
thing you need to worry about is finding a good name that he will respond to.

There are not a lot of suitable Malagasy names (from Madagascar) because most
of them are long and difficult to pronounce. If you want to call your dog
Razafindrandriatsimaniry or Antananarivo, he may respond to the sound of the
first two syllables but after that, he is going to blank you out when you
finish.

I probably would too!

How to Pick the Best Name for Your Puppy

There are a few things to learn and remember when naming and taking care of
your Coton puppy:

I do not have a lot of choices on here since I really searched hard to find the perfect name for a new Coton puppy. If you do not find a name you like on this list, be sure to check around and find something that will work his whole life. Do not choose a name that sounds like a training command (sit, stay, down, etc.) and only choose a short name (one or two syllables) that he will respond to.
Give your dog a great name that you and he can enjoy. Even if you think it is cute now to name your dog “Scooter” (for dragging around on the carpet after an accident) or “Barfy” (after getting sick when out on your boat), a bad name will be with your little dog the rest of his life. A perfect name will make you happier.
Do not give your white dog one of the overused dog names. Your dog is an individual. He deserves to have a unique dog name!

Tips for Caring for a Coton Tuléar

As soon as you have picked out a name, order a name tag online or pick one up at your local pet store. It should contain his name, your name, your landline, and a cell phone number. It is also a good idea to have your dog microchipped in case the tag is lost so discuss this with your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Make sure that you have a brush and a fine-tooth comb and use them every single day. It is a sad thing to see one of these little dogs with his cotton coat all matted. It is painful for the dog, so take care of him every day!
All puppies, no matter how big (or tiny and cute) they will be as an adult, need to learn some basic rules. Please learn all you can about bite inhibition and socialization.
Start training early and continue it throughout your Coton’s life. Both of you will be glad you did.
Take plenty of pictures and have fun together!!

familiar with. When I saw the suggested name Cosmo, my first thought wasn’t
Seinfeld, but Topper, referring to a 1950s sitcom of the same name whose main
