Do you prefer Labrador Retrievers? Well, you are in good company because so
does most of America.

For almost 20 years, the Labrador has topped the list of the most popular
American dog breeds, according to the American Kennel Club. In fact, according
to an article in PawNation by Nancy Barber, when the AKC released its 2013
list of the most popular dog breeds, Labrador Retrievers were in the number
one spot for the 23rd year.

Why do we love these good-natured dogs so much? In addition to their mild
temperaments, they are easy to train, great hunting dogs, and excellent dog
agility competitors.

The roots of the Labrador Retriever can be traced back to 1878 in
Newfoundland, where they were used to catch fish; they were introduced to the
United States in 1917.

Full-grown dogs weigh between 55 to 80 pounds, stand about 23 inches high, and
belong to the sporting group. Coat colors are chocolate, black, or yellow.

Most Popular Dog Breeds: Medium Size Dogs

Beagles are ranked number four, which means they are still ranked in the top
five on the list of the most popular dog breeds for 2013. The world’s most
famous beagle is a fictional character, Snoopy, the comic strip dog created by
the late Charles Schultz. Beagles date back to the fifteenth century and were
used to hunt deer and rabbits.

Their popularity is due to their loving nature, appealing eyes, and long ears
as well as their keen hunting ability.

They are stubborn dogs—but highly intelligent—and with loving care and
consistent training, they make well-behaved companion dogs.

Beagles are average size dogs, which stand about 15 inches high, weigh about
25 pounds, and belong to the Hounds group. Their coats range in color from
tri-colors, red, white, or lemon.

Toy Breeds

Chihuahuas have suffered a recent decline in popularity, falling from number
12 to number 22 on the list of the most popular dogs, but there is no denying
the ongoing appeal of these diminutive dogs.

The breed is known as the world’s smallest dog breed, and two Chihuahuas
achieved fame by being included in the Guinness World records as the world’s
tiniest dogs: Boo Boo, a teeny-tiny four-inch dog, and Brandy, a two-pound
darling.

Chihuahuas are named for their Mexican state of origin and are popular because
of their feisty personalities, diminutive sizes, and loving natures.

Typically, Chihuahuas are one-person dogs and fiercely loyal to their chosen
human.

The breed weighs an average of five pounds, stands about six inches high, and
belongs to the toy group.

Coat color varies greatly, but the most recognizable color is probably the
fawn color of famous Chihuahuas like the Taco Bell Chihuahua or Chloe from
Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

Chihuahuas may be smooth coated or long-haired.

Most Popular Dog Breed? What’s Your Vote?

Carol kim on May 04, 2019:

I have worked as a groomer and I have bred different purebred dogs for over 30
years. The one breed I enjoyed was the rat terrier. I have owned and had
experiences with many breeds through the years but when I retired I purchased
2 rat terriers. I have found they are as enjoyable breed as the ones I worked
with in my years. Intelligent, calm , loyal , easy to groom , easy to feed,
healthy, loyal and loving. They are everything I had hoped they would be. This
is a breed that has been around a long time but has just been recognized by
the bigger organizations. I see this breed in the future to be at the top of
many lists in the future. They are a hidden diamond that word is spreading
about fast.

Well, thank you so much, epigramman! I’m overwhelmed by your graciousness in
promoting this hub. By the way, it looks like you are owned by a particularly
wise and discriminating cat (we too are owned by a calico cat!)

epigramman on January 26, 2012:

Hi, Movie Master! So far, Labrador Retrievers are running away with the votes
in the poll – over 50% of my respondents have voted for them as their
favorite, so you are in the majority. I’ll bet your friend’s dog is
astonishing as it is truly incredible what guide dogs can be taught to do.
Thank you for reading, commenting, and voting on this hub.

Movie Master from United Kingdom on December 15, 2011:

Labradors are my favourite breed, my friend has a Labrador guide dog, she is
amazing!

I really enjoyed this interesting hub, thank you and voted up.

Donna Cosmato (author) from USA on December 14, 2011:

Thanks for sharing about your pet Chihuahua, Blackie, always exploring. I’ve
owned at least one (and sometimes more than one) Chihuahuas for the last 30
years. They are awesome little pals if you socialize them early and get them
used to a variety of environments and people.

One of them used to go on my sales calls with me (I was selling in a rural
area where most of the business owners had dogs) and I carried her in a little
basket just like Toto in the Wizard of Oz. I sure miss her:)

Donna Cosmato (author) from USA on December 14, 2011:

Hi amandacox…I’m so glad that you enjoyed this hub about popular dogs and
their celebrity owners! It is really fascinating to see some of the pets that
the “rich and famous” cater to, isn’t it?

We had a border collie/Saint Bernard mix and were amazed by how smart they
are. The only problem was he tried to herd us everywhere we went, but we loved
him until the very last minute. Thanks for sharing your thoughts:)

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on December 13, 2011:

This was a really interesting hub. I used to own a chihuahuas named Blackie.
He was a great pet..Thank you for sharing…

amandacox from Collingwood, ON on December 13, 2011:

I really enjoyed this hub, it’s very informative and interesting. I loved to
see what kinds of animals these well known celebrities are particular to. I
have an eight month old border collie, and he’s fantastic– so smart! And
incredibly loyal. Anyway, I very much enjoyed this! Happy hubbing. (:

Donna Cosmato (author) from USA on December 12, 2011:

Thanks for reading this and sharing your thoughts about popular dog breeds.
I’ve never heard of the LaChon, so I’m excited to learn about it. I’ll have to
check it out and get more information…I’ll bet they are darling little
dogs:)

Tammy on December 12, 2011:

Interesting hub! I enjoyed the video. I have a fondness for a mix called
LaChon. It is a Lhasa/Bichon. They are like having a child around the house
and easy on those with allergies. The only downfall, is they are high
maintance. I trim our dog every six to eight weeks so her hair doesn’t get
tangled. Thanks for sharing this interesting information!
