Nearly one third (32%) of pet owners say they prefer their pets over someimmediate family members in Canstar Blue’s newest research on pets, relationships with pets and pet products.

Out of over 1,300 pet owners surveyed, two in every five (40%) said their pethas been an invaluable companion during the pandemic and 9% said they boughtor adopted a pet during COVID-19.

Canstar Blue’s Home and Lifestyle expert Megan Birot said, “Pet adoption rateshave increased in the ongoing pandemic since people are lonely and pets canfill that void in their lives.”

“Two in five people think of their pet as their closest companion and bestfriend so it is understandable why more than half of Aussie pet owners saidthe death of a pet is a serious bereavement that can take years to recoverfrom.”

Pet owners don’t just love their pets, they tend to over-love them as thesurvey found that one in three spoil their pets too much.

“More than 40 per cent of respondents said their pet sleeps in their bed and aconsiderable amount of people – 21 per cent – said they often prioritise theirpet’s comfort or preferences over human members of the household,” said Birot.

“Let’s just say that these pet owners would rather not invite you over for abarbeque if it means having to lock their pet in a room or fenced area.”

Loving pets does come at a cost however, since one in ten admitted that theirpet has put strain on their finances.

“The average pet owner in Australia spends $92 dollars per month on pet food, and food is not the only expense your furry friend will require, which is whyit’s advisable to have a budget that you stick to each month,” said Birot
